Due to the precise nature of instrument, regular battery configurations adding up to this voltage will not give consistant results.
On the Practical Machinists website blog, the question came up with suitable batteries for this unit since the dealer replacement cost is $145.00. It was suggested that the Wein cell has the carrying power this unit needs to operate as designed. At 1.35 volts per cell, and very stable, three cells give the exact 5.4 volt replacement. Output characteristics are a match.
